At first glance, it looks like an ordinary black phone pouch. In reality, it may be a Faraday bag designed to temporarily isolate a phone from wireless communication. These products are used by security professionals, forensic investigators and people who work with sensitive information. They may also be useful for public figures and company executives.
What exactly happens when a phone is placed inside?
The phone stays on but loses its connections
A smartphone continuously communicates with its surroundings. It connects to cellular networks, searches for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices, and receives signals from satellite navigation systems. Some applications may also transmit information about the user’s activity or location.
A Faraday bag is made from conductive shielding materials. When the phone is inserted correctly and the bag is fully closed, electromagnetic signals are significantly attenuated. The phone can no longer communicate normally through cellular networks, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and it loses GPS reception.
The result is a physical barrier that does not require the phone’s settings to be changed.
Why is Airplane Mode not always enough?
Airplane Mode is practical for everyday situations, but it depends on the device’s software settings. Wi-Fi or Bluetooth can be switched on separately on many phones, and the exact behaviour may differ between operating systems.
A shielding pouch works differently. You do not need to unlock the phone or change its configuration. The material itself isolates the device from surrounding radio networks.
This is one reason similar solutions are also used in digital forensics. According to NIST guidance, radio isolation can help prevent remote communication with a secured device, including attempts to alter or erase its data.
When can a Faraday bag be useful?
Most people do not need to keep their phone inside a Faraday bag all day. It can, however, be useful in specific situations:
- during confidential business meetings,
- when transporting a phone containing sensitive data,
- when you want to temporarily prevent network-based location tracking,
- while travelling or staying in a security-sensitive environment,
- when storing a device that should not communicate with its surroundings.

It is not an invisibility cloak
A Faraday bag does not erase previously stored location history, remove malware or replace encryption, security updates and a strong passcode. A phone inside may also continue processing or recording information locally. Effective shielding prevents normal wireless transmission, not every activity taking place inside the device.
Once removed from the Faraday bag, the phone reconnects to available networks and applications may resume their communication.
Shielding effectiveness depends on the quality of the materials, the construction of the Faraday bag and correct closure. A high-quality product therefore requires more than a single piece of shielding material. The number of layers, seams and closure design all matter.
